• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jay Soe -- Excellent Pocket Size Book to Carry Around Everywhere and Read at Any Time : This book was written by my former instructor from Metis Data Science and Machines Learning program. I enjoyed her lecture very much as she taught the course so intuitively with her profound knowledge. By reading this book, I felt as if I could hear her voice vividly as if she was lecturing in front of me. Even though this book was written as a pocket guide to be used as a reference when your SQL knowledge is rusty, I have been reading it from cover to cover and it is useful. However, I still recommend that you do study some basic SQL from Coursera or W3School before jumping into this book, as the book is concise and succinct for an absolute beginner to read. Once you know the basics of SQL, the contents of the book will make a lot more sense. The best thing about this book is its pocket size. I don't usually set aside a separate time to read this book. Instead, I carry it everywhere I go, so that whenever I have some idle time such as waiting in line at the restaurant or for a car wash, I read this book instead of killing time by randomly browsing my smartphone. In many years of doing this, I had never gotten such a simple summary of SQL servers as on the very first page of this book! The author walks through illustrations and examples, making it feel very conversational and approachable in a way I wouldn’t have expected from a technical book. This book would be appropriate for a total beginner but would also be useful for someone who understands the big picture already but wants more detail like I did. Compact but packs a big punch. It starts with a really well organized table of contents that's almost like an index (there's also a more detailed index), and gets you very quickly to the specific info you want to know without having to search through long chapters. This makes it a great reference when you're writing a SQL query and have a question in-the-moment on how to do something. Or you can definitely use the book as a study tool to learn new concepts.
